Located in the heart of the 396 acre campus, the UVa-Wise Library is a six-story, 66,000 square foot facility that provides the growing college a visual symbol of its mission and a spectacular venue for learning. Students, faculty and community members appreciate easy access to the general and special collections, while enjoying ample 24/7 study and collaborative spaces, multi-media labs and a cafe. A tiered outdoor seating area overlooking an expansive plaza complements the library's design, builds comunity and encourages campus walkability. The facility's longevity is enhanced through office space for current and future librarians and abundant compact shelving for 300,000 volumes, double the current collection. The UVa-Wise Library is located at the crossroads of the academic and residential precincts, serving as a vertical, accessible link between the upper and lower campus. Design and construction challenges included an earth retention system to allow for excavation and installation of the foundation walls 84' below adjacent grade, less than 25' from a neighboring building on a busy campus. Quesenberry's served as the Construction Manager. Cannon Design's Arlington, Va office was the lead designer with Thompson & Litton of Wise, Va providing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Civil design services. Landscape Design is by Hill Studio and Lighting Design by LaFleur Associates. The project is projected to achieve LEED Certification.
